The General Manager, Risk is a senior leadership role responsible for leading, informing and monitoring key portfolio, enterprise and compliance risk areas for the Guardians. This includes providing risk assurance on the funds and the organisation to the Board and management committees, as well as identifying, measuring, reporting and communicating across the key areas of risk.
Managing a direct team of three, this is a position focused on enterprise leadership that connects teams across the organisation and develops other leaders while running an already well-performing function. This role is challenging and diverse in that it encompasses investment risk and enterprise risk. It must lead as the “voice of risk” for the organisation and work with other members of the leadership team to model and embed risk as a core part of the culture.
Reporting into the Chief Executive Officer, this role is a core member of the executive team and will be expected to bring energy to the group, broad expertise and an ability to contribute beyond the scope of their role in driving co-ordination across the organisation. They will also be involved with the Board where required. Success in the role is dimensioned by the quality of relationships and effective influence across internal customers – principally in the investment, investment operations and finance teams – as well as delivery of BAU processes to the high standard expected.Specific elements of the role include:
• Management of each of the risk, data services and records management teams through their respective leaders, ensuring these teams provide quality advice and support to the business on time;
• Execute specific strategic objectives allocated to the risk business unit in accordance with the annual strategic plan;
• Ensure compliance with all the relevant risk tolerance limits for both the Risk business unit and the Guardians, in accordance with the Risk Management Policy;
• Review policies and risk records (as allocated), and ensure the risk documentation for the Risk business unit is reviewed regularly and kept up to date; and
• Membership of the investment and / or risk committees as required
This role requires proven leadership experience and a track record of influencing and contributing across an enterprise. Relevant functional expertise is required but fundamentally, this is a leadership role first and relies on an ability to lead highly skilled teams, create an environment of ongoing improvement and develop leadership capability.
Substantial experience in managing an investment risk function is required.
