With an appetite for change, The Guardians has recognised a need for the creation of a Data Services function that will sit across the business, forming part of the Finance & Risk business unit. With the primary purpose to build trust & confidence in The NZ Super Fund’s investment data and investment reporting, the function has a pivotal role in supporting the business to achieve its overall strategic data objectives. As the Head of, you will be responsible for helping shape the data practices, and data production process support required, to in turn enable efficient and effective investment decision making and risk management. With a heavy reliance on external data partners (such as Bloomberg) to provide much of the information needed for the internal investment analysts, the Head of will be required to apply a data consumer centric focus to ensure that the organisation is supported in obtaining the data they require, with the right quality controls and performance measures.

Key Responsibilities

Your key responsibilities would include:

  • Hire, lead, coach, support, develop and manage direct reports within the Data Services function to meet the needs of the business
  • Provide influence, leadership and expertise to engage with all parts of the organisation about data governance in a meaningful way to support the Fund’s strategic and operational data needs.
  • Work with relevant stakeholders, including the Data Strategy Group, Leadership Team and Board to establish, implement and refine the Fund’s data governance model.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with international peers and collaborate where appropriate.
Your Background

We are looking for a leader with experience in setting up and providing strategic direction of a Data Services function. 

You will ideally have:

  • Significant experience in leading a data function, with a specific focus on data management, quality, governance and risk.
  • A strong continuous improvement focus with a creative, and diligent approach to identifying and solving the root causes of business data problems.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management capabilities.
  • Strong customer service focus, with a can do attitude and a willingness to find sustainable and creative solutions.
  • Vendor/asset management experience in contract management and negotiation, and monitoring service level compliance.
  • Experience in operations management ideally in relation to data production and exception management processes.
  • Clear strategic approach to continually develop and grow the business unit.
  • Collegial, constructive approach, including the ability to foster both internal and external relationships.
  • Strong verbal, and written communication skills.
