About the role 

Part of the Portfolio Completion team, the NZ Equities team is responsible for managing active direct listed New Zealand Equities investments for the Fund.  Our fundamental (bottom-up) investment approach helps us lead the Fund's engagement with companies and other listed market participants in the NZ market (our backyard).  We work closely with the broader Portfolio Completion team to trade and implement the Fund's broader NZ Equities investments.  We also work closely with our Sustainable Investment team with respect to voting, corporate governance, policy settings and sustainable investment across the market.     

As an Associate, you will add value through your purpose led approach, curiosity about business and equity markets, analysis skills and ability to work well with both internal and external stakeholders.  

This role offers an opportunity to work in a tight knit team that is active in the NZ listed market.  As part of the broader Portfolio Completion and Guardians team, you also have great career development opportunities and exposure to a variety of interesting investment activity delivered in a collaborative environment where we all strive to deliver on the Fund's overall purpose. 

 

What you’ll be doing 

  • Investment research, analysis and financial modelling - Fundamental (bottom-up) equity research and financial analysis on New Zealand and Australian listed companies is a core component of the role.  This includes industry and company resarch, building and maintaining financial models to express a valuation view and preparing clear, thoughtful and well structured investment notes and reports 

  •  

  • Supporting portfolio management, asset class and reporting activities - Expected to contribute to the ongoing operation, maintenance and evolution of team processes and tools.  This includes reporting to internal stakeholders and working closely across the broader Portfolio Completion team. 

  •  

  • Communicating clearly - Strong written and verbal communication skills are important to assist with both internal and external engagement, particularly with company managements and Boards 

  •  

  • Engaging constructively - a constructive and collaborative approach is important for helping to nurture a strong culture internally and engaging well with the external market 

  •  

  • Operating under a High Trust model -Need to be able to operate well both independently and work well within a team.  Structured approach to planning and discipline with hitting delivery milestones is important.  Ongoing compliance with Guardians risk management settings (policies, procedures etc) is a non-negotiable.   

 

 

About you 

You're purpose-led, intellectually curious with a genuine interest in equity markets and business.  You bring strong analytical capabilites along with the ability to work collaboratively within a team to get things done.  

You will likely have:  

  • Financial markets experience - a solid grasp of corporate finance, financial statement analysis and financial modelling techniques is valuable.  A working knowledge of the listed NZ market, portfolio management and economics also helps. 

     

  • Curiosity + analytical aptitude - strong analytical skills, structured thinking, and clear written and verbal communication.  Curiosity is important – there can be many ways to tackle a challenge.  

     

  • Flexible, organised and practical approach - strong organisations skills with ability to plan and work independently.  High attention to detail.  Composed and able to make decisions in a dynamic environment 

     

  • Collegial approach - constructive approach and the ability to build effective internal and external relationships
