  • Alice Mew (Chair)

    BSc Chemistry, BCom (Hons) Economics Senior Investment Strategist

    Alice Mew joined the Guardians in 2017 as a Senior Investment Strategist in the Direct Investment Team. Prior to this, she spent eight years at BlackRock in London, where she was a Director in the Fundamental Fixed Income team.  Alice started her career at the Reserve Bank of New Zealand before moving to London in 2001. In London she worked across a variety of markets and asset classes for Moody’s, Standard & Poor’s, Barclays Global Investors and BlackRock.

  • Matt Whineray

    BCom, LLB (Hons) Chief Executive Officer

    Matt was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Guardians in July 2018. He is responsible for the general management of the Guardians of New Zealand Superannuation and of the New Zealand Superannuation Fund under delegation from the Board.

    Matt first joined the Guardians in May 2008 as General Manager, Private Markets. In 2014 he became Chief Investment Officer, overseeing the Investments Group, responsible for the Fund's portfolio construction and investment activity in listed and unlisted markets, both directly and through investment managers. Matt's achievements in this role included overseeing the development of the Fund's climate change strategy, risk allocation process and risk budget  framework, along with strengthening of the Guardians' New Zealand and international direct investment capabilities.  

    Before joining the Guardians, Matt was at Credit Suisse (Hong Kong) where he was Head of Financial Sponsor Coverage for non-Japan Asia. Prior to this, he was a Managing Director at First NZ Capital in New Zealand and a Vice President at Credit Suisse First Boston in New York. Matt began his career as a Barrister and Solicitor with Russell McVeagh in Auckland.

    Matt is a member of Focusing Capital on the Long Term and a Director of Netball New Zealand. Matt has previously served as a member of the World Economic Forum General Agenda Council on the Future of Investing, and as Chair of the InZone Education Foundation.

  • Michael Mitchell

    Head of Risk

    Michael joined the Fund in 2005 to establish the Fund’s Responsible Investment processes. Since then, he has switched his focus to the Guardians’ risk requirements and has been instrumental in establishing the Risk Record framework, the development of the in-house trading for liquidity and reference portfolio completion. Prior to starting at the Guardians, Michael worked for the Reserve Bank of New Zealand in Wellington before moving on to Morgan Stanley, Westpac Investment Management and ABN Amro.

  • Stephen Gilmore

    BCom, MCom, CA Chief Investment Officer

    Stephen joined the Guardians in 2019. As Chief Investment Officer, he is responsible for overseeing the Asset Allocation, Responsible Investment, External Investments & Partnerships, and Direct Investment teams.

    Prior to this, Stephen was the Chief Investment Strategist at the Future Fund, Australia's sovereign wealth fund. In this role he was responsible for Investment Strategy, Investment Risk, Derivative Overlays and Investment (technology) Solutions, a team which acted as an interface between investment and technology. Earlier in his career Stephen held senior strategy roles in London and Hong Kong with AIG Financial Products and Morgan Stanley. He has also worked with the International Monetary Fund in Washington, the Reserve Bank of New Zealand in Wellington, and Chase Manhattan in London.

    Stephen was previously a member of the Australian Foreign Exchange Committee and the Institute for International Finance Market Monitoring Group.

  • Mark Fennell

    M.Soc.Sci (Hons), DipACC, Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA) and INFINZ (Certified) General Manager, Risk

    Mark joined the Guardians in 2007 as General Manager, Operations. In 2012 he was appointed General Manager, Portfolio Completion, where he oversees the team’s implementation of the Reference Portfolio, as well as currency overlay, rebalancing, and liquidity management.

    Prior to this, he worked for The Warehouse Group where he held roles as Company Secretary, Treasurer and Chief Risk Manager. Mark has considerable public sector experience in State Owned Enterprises, working as Treasurer for the Forestry Corporation, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and NZ Railways Corporation respectively. In these roles, he oversaw treasury and banking relationships, managed financing and debt portfolios, established treasury policy, systems and software, and lead various teams.

    Mark is a member of the NZ Institute of Financial Professionals Inc (INFINZ).

  • George Crosby

    LLB/BCom General Manager, Portfolio Completion

    George joined the Guardians in 2008, where he was instrumental in the establishment of the Portfolio Investments team, a major source of active returns for the Fund. Prior to joining the Guardians he traded various derivatives books at Westpac, BNP Paribas and Toronto Dominion Bank in Wellington and London. As General Manager Portfolio Completion George will oversee the implementation of the NZ Super Fund’s Reference Portfolio, currency overlay, rebalancing and liquidity management along with a number of internal investment mandates with a credit and arbitrage focus.

  • Del Hart

    BMS (Hons) Finance and Marketing Head of External Investments and Partnerships

    Prior to joining the Guardians in 2010 Del was Client Service Manager for Russell Investments, where she was responsible for all aspects of the institutional client relationships in New Zealand. Del also spent 5 years in London working as a Risk Manager for Pictet Asset Management, and before that held a variety of other roles in the financial services industry. 

  • Alex Bacchus

    MSc, BE (Hons) Head of Strategic Tilting

    Prior to joining the Guardians in 2009 Alex worked for Goldman Sachs JBWere (NZ) Ltd as Director of Derivatives for two years. Before this he worked at Merrill Lynch for seven years in London as Vice President. In this role he was a structured credit derivatives trader, managing a large trading book and market-making on tranches, bespoke CDOs, default swap options and other derivatives.

  • Anne-Maree O'Connor

    MSc, BSc Head of Responsible Investment

    Anne-Maree O’Connor is Head of Responsible Investment for the New Zealand Superannuation Fund (NZSF). Her main role is the development and oversight of the Guardians’ responsible investment (RI) framework which includes integrating environmental, social and governance considerations across the New Zealand Superannuation Fund’s investments. Anne-Maree is a past board member of the RI Association Australasia and is a recipient of the Women of Influence 2017 award in the Board and Management category. She was a Commissioner on the Financial Sector Commission on Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking (Liechtenstein Initiative) during its one year mandate.

    Anne-Maree has over 20 years of RI experience and has held senior roles in the RI and corporate responsibility field including Managing Director of CoreRatings, Associate Director RI at Aviva’s Morley Fund Management and Head of RI Research at Henderson Global Investors and National Provident Institution (NPI).  

  • Will Goodwin

    BCA, MAF Head of Direct Investments

    Will joined the Guardians in 2016 having spent 2 years as CFO at Todd Minerals, based in Sydney. Prior to this he held various senior executive roles across the Todd Corporation in Corporate Development and Private Equity.

  • Brad Dunstan

    BCom, PGDip Head of Portfolio Completion

    Brad joined the Fund in September 2013 having worked for Cannacord Genuity in London as Co-Head of European Equity Derivatives. Prior to that, Brad spent 11 years working in London for various investment banks including Bear Stearns and JP Morgan.

  • Charles Hyde

    BSc, PhD Head of Asset Allocation

    As Head of Asset Allocation Dr Hyde will oversee the construction of the Fund’s Reference Portfolio, the allocation of risk capital across the Fund and the Guardians’ economics function.

    Dr Hyde joined the Guardians in 2015 as a Senior Investment Strategist, in which role he has chaired one of the Guardians’ risk budgeting teams and been closely involved in a number of key projects including the 2020 review of the Reference Portfolio, reviews of the Guardians’ investment hurdles and proxies, and the Guardians’ climate change strategy. He has also been heavily involved in developing the Guardians’ equity factors investment strategy.

    Dr Hyde’s previous roles include Head of Quantitative Research at MIR Investment Management; Head of Equities Research and Equity Quant Strategies at CBA Institutional Equities Research; and Principal Economist - Transfer Pricing at Deloitte. Dr Hyde has also held a number of academic roles in finance and economics at Macquarie University, the University of Sydney and the University of Melbourne. He has a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley.
